CARE Egypt’s first challenge event was the BG Egypt Energy Challenge Event, held in South Sinai, December 2004. The concept was derived from the BG Group Energy Challenge Event organized by CARE UK.

In Egypt, the 2004 BG Egypt Energy Challenge Event involved the oil and gas sector as well as other sectors to raise funds for local development projects in the poorest regions of the country. The 2004 pilot event raised an impressive 90% more funds than originally anticipated. These funds are reaching poor communities in Upper Egypt through the environmental projects ALIVE, SAFE and EMPOWERS.

In 2005, the partnership between BG and CARE continued when the second BG Egypt Energy Challenge attracted 26 teams who raised funds, hiked, climbed, camped and laughed through it all. The teams, formed from oil and gas companies, hotels, banks, and IT companies, spent two days in the serene valleys, gardens and mountains of Sinai.

In the UK, the BG Group Energy Challenge Event annual fundraising event is celebrating its 10th year in 2005. The event is exclusive to the oil and gas sector, where in the UK participating teams climb the three highest peaks and complete a mystery activity within 24 hours. Today, CARE’s Challenge Series in the UK raise more than $1.5 million per year; all funds support the poor in CARE’s development projects around the world.
