Bring the Community Together To

Clean Up Wadi Degla Protected Area

Sixty adults and 30 children from different walks of life came together despite sand storms to participate in a clean up of the Wadi Degla Protected Area on Friday, April 8th 2005.

The clean up was part of a Challenge Event sponsored by CARE Egypt in celebration of Earth Day to promote environmental awareness amongst the community.

The CARE Egypt Challenge Event was a modified triathlon designed to attract people of different fitness levels.

The TriEarthalon included a 5K hike, 8K run, and a 12K bike in the valleys and hills of this million-year old protected area outside of Maadi.

The event attracted a highly diverse group of participants. Twenty fourth-grade students from Cairo American College as well as ten Egyptian girls from CARE’s New School Program in Fayoum took part in the clean up.

There were teams from Cadbury and ShopRite as well as other business leaders, eco-tourism professionals and members of the diplomatic community.

With more than 100 jumbo-sized trash bags collected, the Tri-Earthalon was able to promote community participation, environmental awareness and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Egypt, while getting people out of the busy city to rediscover the beauty and value of natural settings like Wadi Degla.

"It felt very good doing something useful to the environment alongside colleagues and friends. Thank you for giving us this chance and we are looking forward to more events.”

Yasmine Gaafar, Cadbury

CARE Egypt organized the event in partnership with the Egyptian Environmental Affairs Agency (EEAA). Various corporate sponsors sent teams to participate in the clean up and donated generously, including ShopRite chain of grocery stores that donated water and fresh fruits for all the participants, Cadbury donated Moro chocolate bars, and Wadi Degla Sporting Club catered the post event barbecue.

Spring Cleaning

If you are familiar with Wadi Degla, you are aware that plastic bags are carried by the wind and are trapped in the valley chocking the vegetation and polluting the surroundings.

Effort from the Tri-Earthalon participants helped contribute to beautify this valley which is enjoyed by so many people.
