CARE was born in the difficult days following World War II, when ordinary people in the United States and Canada wanted to help those suffering hardship and deprivation in Europe. More than 100 million CARE Packages were sent to help feed those whose lives had been ravaged by war.

Times have changed since the early days of CARE.

Back then, as survivors of World War II began to recover and rebuild, the CARE Package quickly became a symbol of compassion and generosity for millions - and a beacon of hope for the hungry and homeless.

Now, over half a century later, CARE is a proven leader among international humanitarian organizations. We still respond to emergencies and meet immediate needs when people are at risk. However, we do much more than disaster relief.

Today, CARE is a global force - a sought-after partner in the fight against poverty - striving to bring lasting, meaningful change in some of the world’s poorest communities.

CARE International now operates in over 65 countries applying more than 55 years of experience in both emergency relief and long-term development efforts. Over the last half-century, we have also helped communities cope with the world's worst humanitarian disasters

Examples of some emergencies that CARE was involved in include; wars in Biafra, Cambodia, Somalia, Rwanda, Bosnia, Afghanistan, and natural catastrophes in Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Honduras, Haiti, El Salvador, India and most recently the Tsunami disaster in Asia.
